Testimonial

“I have been actively playing the guitar for about a year now and have formed a little group to play with, two more guitars and a key board player. The lessons we have gleamed from the Guitar-Alliance site has helped us over many of the rough spots we could never agree on what or how to do it. Thanks Guys but keep the good news coming.” -George Yohanek

Total Beginner Guitar

c chord Guitar Alliance Lessons

If you’re a beginner guitarist and need to learn the basics of guitar then you’ll want to begin in “Beginner Guitar”. You’ll learn things such as guitar anatomy, tuning, proper positioning, basic chords, basic key signatures, and guitar maintenance.

CAGED: Guitar Unleashed

CAGED gives you a way to think about the fret board that merges scales with chords and arpeggios. Basically there are five stationary position scales that correspond with the five chord shapes.

CAGED is not an invention. Nor is it something made up to sound fancy and fool you.  CAGED is a system that is derived from the unique tuning of the guitar. It occurs naturally .

CAGED gets it’s name from the primary chord shapes found on the guitar. They are C, A, G, E, and D. These 5 basic chord  shapes are the key to total fretboard domination. Every other chord, scale, and arpeggio can be built from  5  basic shapes.

Understanding and mastering the CAGED system is the greatest achievement for any guitarist and we’ll will show you how to do this–and more!

Guitar Chords

There is an easy way to learn chords and there is a hard way to learn chords. We hope that you will see it our way and take the easy path presented in this section. Not only will you learn hundreds of chords quickly, but you will have a better understanding of how chords work.

Chords are 3 notes played at the same time. There are all types of chords. The most common chord is the major chord. Minor chords and Dominant 7th chords are used quite often as well. Some of them may have strange sounding names at first, but don’t let the name scare you.

Even if you are an experienced guitarist you will benefit from what you will find here. You’ll discover how to play all types of chords, but most importantly you’ll be able to play them anywhere on the neck of the guitar!

Why do most people learn the hard way? Well, it’s not by fault of their own by any means. Most learning materials are just “chord encyclopedias” with page after page of chords. Some of them have thousands of chord diagrams. How is any ever going to be able to learn that many chord patterns?! I don’t think it’s even possible!

You, on the other hand, are in better luck! There is an easier way. And it all begins with just 5 basic chord patterns, but more on that in a moment.

Guitar Scales

A lot of people get confused when it comes to scales because most books, magazines, and other instructional material on them make them out to be more complicated than they really are. In all the world of music there are literally dozens of different types of scales, but learning them all is overkill for a guitarist. It’s just not practical because of the way the guitar’s fretboard is step up.

Scales are the building blocks of music. They are a sequence of notes that provide a road map for just about everything including chord construction, chord progressions, songwriting, and soloing. Understanding scales is about as essential to a guitarist’s survival as water is to a fish. This section will open up the world of scales to you and completely demystify any misconceptions you may already have about them.

On the other hand, you don’t need to know scales to play lead guitar, or for that matter, any instrument. A lot of the old blues players claim that they don’t know any scales or theory whatsoever. All you need is an ear to tell you if the notes sound good.

Knowing scales does allow you to be able to improvise smoothly and coherently without sounding like a train wreck. Theory is great, but feel is just as important. Developing both is the tricky part. That said, learn your scales. It will help.

In a way, learning scales is kind of like learning what notes go together well when you’re playing in a certain key. Knowing these scales will give you a foundation to know what lead notes sound good together and which ones don’t.

Guitar Arpeggios

An arpeggio is built from the notes that make up a chord, but are picked as individual notes. They may be used as fill-ins, linking melodies with chords and chord/melody. Arpeggios have their own patterns but not unlike their chord counterparts. There are 5 basic patterns for each type type of arpeggio just like there were 5 basic patterns for chords.

As stated above, arpeggios may contain the same notes as their chord counterparts, but they are played a totally different way. They must be picked as individual notes. You don’t want the notes to ring together, you want them ring out separately-one note at a time. You can hear exactly what we mean in the audio examples with each arpeggio pattern.

The most important thing to pay attention to when learning these patterns is your fingerings. Each pattern presented will show you the correct fingering to use. In the diagram below is an arpeggio form. Notice the fingerings labeled in the black dots.

Each arpeggio has two diagrams. The first one shows the fingerings as previously stated. The second picture for each arpeggio shows the root and highlights the CAGED chord pattern that the arpeggio is extracted from.

Guitar Mojo

srv2 Guitar Alliance Lessons

  • Learn how to play dozens of blues songs in the style of your favorite blues artists.

Do you want to be able to wail like blues greats such as B.B. King, Eric Clapton, or Stevie Ray Vaughan, but no matter how hard you try, it just doesn’t come out right? At times you might even wish that you could visit the mythological crossroads that Robert Johnson made famous.

As legends go, many famous blues players were said to possess powerful mojos given to them from a variety of sources. These sources could include a witch doctor, a fellow blues man, or the Devil himself. The mojo itself could be just about anything, from a bag full of “magic powder” to a rabbit’s foot. It was simply a lucky charm that many believed gave them that “magic touch” when it came to playing blues guitar.

Are the legends true?

Perhaps, but I feel that there was a little more to it than just luck or magic. In order to be a great blues guitar player you need more than that. Yes, you need to have a bit of natural ability, but what you really need is a strong desire and the right training.

That’s where Guitar Mojo comes in!

The material that we will be covering is essentially that which is contained in music theory or harmony courses on the college level and has been approved for overall course structure. (Another first for us in the world of teaching guitar lessons!)
