Discover The Fretboard
4.) Finding Notes On The Fretboard Exercise
Instructions
In Mapping
Out The Fretboard we learned the 12 notes in music
and how they apply to the guitar fretboard. By using note
order we discovered that we could figure out the note
on any given fret, by using the open string as a guide.
Now that we have an understanding of the
concept, let's put it to use.
In the exercise that follows you are to
look at the diagram of the guitar fretboard and identify
the note where the red dot is by using the open strings
as a guide and by following the note order
Example:

Enter the name of the
note where the red dot is:
The Note is on the high E string. We use
the open E note as our starting point in the note order.
Note order: A-A#/Bb-B-C-C#/Db-D-D#/Eb-E-F-F#/Gb-G-G#/Ab
The note F comes after E, so we know that the first fret
would be an F. F#/Gb would be on the second fret and the
3rd fret is G. Remember that once you get to the end of
the note order it starts over at the beginning. Following
up the fretboard in this fashion we find that C#/Db lands
us on the 9th fret where the red dot is. Therefore the
answer is C# or Db. Use a lower case "b"
for the flat symbol.
