Blue Oyster Cult was put together on a college campus by a couple of rock critics, and they maintained a close relationship with very influential literary figures such as Eric Von Lustbader, Patti Smith, Michael Moorcock, and Stephen King. ( Yes, the Stephen King!) They turned out some of the more listenable metal music from the early to mid '70s.

Intro

In this lesson I will teach you how to play the dual harmony guitar parts from intro to the song "Burning For You". There are actually 3 guitar parts. The third part simply plays an F power chord every two measures, and below is an example of how to play it using a chord diagram. Since this part is relatively minimal, there is no need to go into much detail with it. The 1st and 2nd guitar parts are shown below. The riff is in 4/4 timing, and both parts have a hammer-on and pull-off in each measure. A hammer-on is when you go from a lower note to a higher note, only striking the first note. A pull-off is the opposite, going from a higher note to a lower note, only striking the first note.

Hear This Lesson:

Guitar 1

Here's what it sounds like looped at the normal tempo of 132 bpm:

Begin this measure by using your 3rd finger to play the fifth fret on the "B" string. Next, use your 1st finger to play the third fret on the same string, and quickly hit the fifth fret with your 3rd finger and let off. That is a hammer-on and pull-off at the same time. Neat huh? Ok, now just move your 1st finger to the first fret on the same string and play it once. To end the measure, use your 4th finger to play the third fret on the "high E" string.

The second measure is self-explanatory as long as you notice that at the end of this measure, don't play the third fret on the "high E" string.

Guitar 2

Here's what it sounds like at the normal tempo of 132bpm:

The second part is much like the first guitar part, but just on different frets and different strings. Begin this in the same way that you would the first guitar part. Place your 4th finger on the fifth fret on the "G" string. Play that once, and then use your 3rd finger to hit the fourth fret on the same string. Here is once again where you will perform the hammer-on and pull-off within the same measure. Do that accordingly, and then use your 1st finger to play the second fret on the "G" string. Use your 4th finger to play the fifth fret on the "high E" string.

The next measure is identical to the first part, just remember not to hit the fifth fret on the "high E" string this time. Have fun!!!

Intro Solo

In this lesson I will teach you how to play the solo from intro to the song "Burning For You".

Here's what it sounds like looped at the normal tempo of 132 bpm:

Here are the suggested fingerings for the first part:

Begin the solo riff from this popular song by placing your 2nd finger on the eighth fret on the "B" string. Hold that note for a measure, and then go to the "high E" string with your 2nd finger on the eighth fret. Here you will be performing a pull-off to the seventh fret. Remember that a pull-off is when you go from a higher note to a lower note, only striking the first note(s). Pull-off from your 2nd finger on the eighth fret to your 1st finger on the seventh fret on the same string. Then, go back to the eighth fret on the "B" string with your 2nd finger and barre both the "B" string on that fret and the "high E" string on the eighth fret. That will prepare you for the next note. After you have played the eighth fret on the "high E" string, use your 1st finger and hammer-on the ninth fret on the "G" string. Next you will use your 2nd finger to play the tenth fret on the same string. A hammer-on is when you go from a lower note to a higher note, only striking the first note(s). After you have hammered-on, use your 1st finger to play the eighth fret on the "B" string to finish the measure.

Begin the third measure by keeping your 1st finger on the eighth fret on the "B" string. Then, you will need to play the tenth fret on the "G" string with your 2nd finger. Next, use your 1st finger to play the ninth fret on the same string. To end this measure, use your 2nd finger on the tenth fret on the "A" string. Let that bleed into the fourth measure a bit.

For the fourth measure, use any two fingers and play the fifth fret on the "high E" string and then the seventh fret on the same string.

Here are the suggested fingerings for the 2nd part:

The first measure of the second part of this solo begins with you needing to place your 3rd finger on the eighth fret on the "B" string. Then, use your 1st finger on the fifth fret on the same string, and then immediately use your 3rd finger again to play the eighth fret on the same string.

For the second measure, barre your 1st finger on the fifth fret on the "high E" string, the "B" string ( but you will not be using it ), and the "G" string. That will allow you to play the notes shown at the beginning. Play those notes, and then use your 3rd finger to play the seventh fret on the "G" string once. To end the measure, use your 1st finger on the fifth fret on the "B" string.

The third measure is a little challenging. Begin it by placing your 1st finger on the ninth fret on the "G" string. Then, barre your 3nd finger on the "B" string, the "G" string, and the "high E" string. That will help you in playing the next part. With your 3rd finger barred, play the notation in order UNTIL you get to the "high E" string. Once you have gotten there, place your 4th finger on the twelfth fret on the "high E" string once, and then remove that finger. Play the "high E" with your finger still barred on the tenth fret. To end the measure, move your 1st finger to the twelfth fret on the "G" string.

For the fourth measure, begin by placing your 2nd finger on the twelfth fret on the "G" string just as you did at the end of the third measure. Then, use your 4th finger to slide to the fifteenth fret on the "high E" string. That is it for the solo riff!!
