"Roundabout" by Yes Part I

Riff Rundown

Difficulty: Easy - Intermediate

This is a rather tricky song, so let's just start with the intro for now.

Intro Riff

**The opening audio sample is NOT the first line played below. It will actually be the pickup note from the last measure.

(It's the seventh fret on the B string at the end that kicks it off.)

This is meant to be played fingerstyle (picked with your fingers, not a pick!) and on an acoustic guitar.

The opening line is a harmonic, with a finger scrape on the harmonic.

Notice that the {12}on the low E string below is NOT played together with the finger scrape. You will hit that note and then immediately scrape the other 12th fret notes. To perform a harmonic, you need to lightly apply pressure a little off of the 12th fret, almost at the 13th fret. Your finger should be right at the middle point between the two.

The line that comes next is self-explanatory. Just pay close attention to the triplet again. Then, double that speed and play the next measure and let the third fret ring for one whole measure before proceeding.

The line below is basically a repeat of the measures directly above, but this time you are to repeat the second measure of the intro. This time, end on the 7th fret with a whole note. Remember, a whole note gets four beats.

We will expand on this lesson more soon, but let's make sure we got this part before proceeding to the rest of the song.
